Looking to surround yourself with beauty in Idaho? Then try these things to do in McCall Idaho!
This mountain destination is great year-round, and most of the recommended activities below can be done in any season (though a few are best done during summer or its shoulder seasons).
2024 First Timer’s Guide to McCall Idaho
What sets the town apart from other Pacific Northwest destinations?
Sitting at over 5,000′, McCall is a lovely mountain resort town on the southern shores of glacier-carved Payette Lake.
Not only does this mean that there are plenty of recreation opportunities in and on the 5,330 acres of water, but even from town the views are stunning. So whether you are seeking a laidback, relaxing getaway or a more active, adventurous trip, both are possible here.
For me, what makes McCall special is how close it is to wild spaces. I could hardly believe my eyes when driving around the lake. Within 40 minutes we went from charming downtown to alpine forest where moose roam.
So if you are a fellow nature lover, then you need to check out these things to do in McCall Idaho!
Where is McCall Idaho located?
On a map, McCall can be found on the west side of the state (which borders Oregon). There is much national forest lands both to the North and South.
The nearest major city is Boise, which is 100 miles to the south.
From Seattle, it is a 473-mile. We took I-90 over the Vantage Bridge, connected with highway 26, transferred to highway 195 (towards Pullman), and then took highway 95 in Idaho until the New Meadows junction. In total, the drive is 8 hours (not including stops).
What is the best time to visit?
Like I mentioned before, this isn’t really a bad time to visit McCall. However, I recommend timing your visit based on what you want to do.
For the following things to do in McCall, it would be best to visit between late spring and early fall. This is especially true for the lake cruise, as it does not operate year-round.
That being said, the town is also known for having the highest average snowfall in Idaho. It comes to no surprise, then, that there are 3 ski resorts nearby. If snowboarding or skiing is your vibe, then use this guide to plan your spring, summer, and fall adventures. Then, return in the winter to see McCall beautifully transformed in its winter wear.
Where to stay in McCall?
Our favorite place to stay is a recently renovated hotel that is just a few blocks away from downtown. (Yes, you can walk to restaurants and shops!)
While researching places to stay, I was honestly delighted to find the Nordic Inn because it is reasonably priced, modern aesthetic, and close proximity to town.
During our time there, we were not disappointed. The check-in process was quick, we loved being able to park very close to our room, and we slept so well in our comfy king bed.
Since there are lots of great bites nearby, we didn’t mind not having a kitchen. And, the little touches like the wall rack with hooks for hanging your bags kept our space organized — which I greatly appreciated!
Things to do in McCall Idaho
1. Catch Sunset While Sailing on Payette Lake
To start our trip off on a high note, the first thing after checking in to our hotel was go for a sunset adults-only cruise!
Hosted by McCall Lake Cruises, this excursion departs right from downtown. For the next 2 hours, you will explore nearly all of the lake. Along the way, there is some narration explaining various points of interest. And, the on-board bar serves great drinks like specialty cocktails, beer, and Sharlie Temple — a fun, nonalcoholic twist on a Shirley Temple. (Named after the town’s legendary lake monster!)
As we saw firsthand, many people enjoy celebrating special locations like anniversaries and even engagements on board “The Idaho.”
After fees, tickets cost ~$45 per person.
Besides the sunset option, you can also opt for a family friendly mid-day cruise or a private charter.
2. Grab a Coffee at North Fork Coffee Roasters
Before we get into more fun outdoor adventures, I have to share where to start your day.
Hands down, one of the best coffee shops in McCall is North Fork Coffee Roasters.
Located in a quieter area just a few blocks from downtown, this is a women-owned cafe that specializes in organic roasting. During fall, you need to try the pumpkin cream latte! The latte art was *chef’s kiss*
If you’re hungry you’ll find a wide selection of mouthwatering fresh pastries (more on that below).
While waiting for your order to be prepared, be sure to browse the cute selection of stickers and boho chic earrings made my local artists.

3. Satisfy Your Sweet Tooth at Stacey Cakes
If you’re anything like me and enjoy popping into bakeries while on vacation, then do not miss Stacey Cakes.
Since 2011, this shop has served pastries, custom cakes, and more to the McCall community. As soon as you open the door, you’ll be greeted with the smell of cinnamon rolls fresh out of the oven. Somehow, I was lucky enough to get the first slice of the day! (Definitely sharing size).
Another favorite is anything with huckleberry, such as the huckleberry scones.
Choose between cozy indoor seating and lively garden-like outdoor seating.
Bestie Tip: Check bakery hours online. At the time of writing, the shop is open Thursday-Sunday. If you can’t make those days, then swing by North Fork because they serve pastries made by Stacey Cakes!!
4. Take A Scenic Drive on the Wild Side
Of all the things to do in McCall Idaho, this one is one that we did every single day of our visit — it was that gorgeous!
Since the town is located at the southern shore of Payette Lake, it is the perfect home base for exploring all the way up to the northern shore and beyond, up to Upper Payette Lake.
To do this, you can drive either Warren Wagon road or Eastside Drive. Personally, we preferred starting on the latter as it is less-developed with houses.
A few spots worth checking out:
- North Beach – a walk-to spacious white sand beach perfect for swimming
- Twah Creek Picnic Area – reflective riverside spot that moose can sometimes be seen from
Both of these are units of Ponderosa State Park, and therefore require either a day use fee or an Idaho state parks pass.
5. Relax on the Lake Shore
Don’t have the time for a scenic drive? No worries! You can easily enjoy Payette Lake directly from McCall. This is where beaches like Art Roberts Park, Legacy Park, and Brown Park shine. All are walkable from downtown, and make perfect picnic spots.
If you enjoy reading, painting, or boat watching be sure to check these out.
Dogs are allowed, and it is common to see a labrador retriever (or two) playing fetch at the beach near Art Roberts Park.
6. Paddle Through the Meanders
At the northernmost point of Payette Lake, where the river feeds into the lake, lies a windy waterway passage appropriately dubbed the Meanders. This place is an experienced paddler’s dream: there’s easy access, interpretive signs, and the possibility of seeing moose!
Typically, the best time to do this is summer. During peak tourist season, rentals are available at Backwoods Adventures Canoe & Kayak Rentals. Otherwise, feel free to bring your own.
Be sure to wear life jackets and monitor the weather – you do not wan to be surprised by a thunderstorm.
7. Hike Goose Creek Falls
Given the stunning surroundings, it should come as no surprise that a hike made the list of best things to do in McCall Idaho. For an short yet moderate hike with great pay-off try Goose Creek Falls. Located in Payette National Forest, this popular dog-friendly trail is a favorite.
Almost immediately from the trailhead, hikers descend into a forest valley. Listen for the sounds of the creek below, which get louder as you get closer. Water crossings are common, so be sure to wear waterproof shoes.

Once you get to a wooden bridge over the creek, take out your cameras. This is a lovely refreshing look at Goose Creek. Some hikers choose to make this their turnaround spot, as the other viewpoints are more challenging to reach.
For views of the actual waterfalls, continue over the bridge. Soon, there will be an unmarked (somewhat sketchy) view of small falls. For the ultimate view, keep hiking until you see the sign for Goose Creek Falls. Please note that this section requires a rocky scramble down, and I would not recommend it after/during rain when it may be slippery.
Interestingly, expect to gain nearly all of the elevation on the return trip climbing back out of the valley. In total, we logged 4 miles and 700′ of elevation.
8. Explore a Ghost Town
If you’re anything like me, then stepping back in time to the 1880s! This is possible just 20 minutes from McCall, at the Historic Roseberry Townsite.
Many displays, such as the Johnson Cabin or the collection of farming machinery, are always open to the public. You can come and walk the grounds anytime. To deepen the experience, take your time reading the interpretive signs.
In addition, the Long Valley Preservation Society maintains a museum, one-room schoolhouse, and Methodist church. To see current hours (usually weekends between 1pm and 4pm) check the website. Donations welcomed.
Bestie Tip: My favorite must-do’s are ringing the bells, picking up a local history book, and taking in the gorgeous scenery
9. Go Mountain Biking
Right up there in popularity with hiking and boating is the exciting sport of mountain biking!
McCall is right in the center of abundant mountain biking opportunities! There is something for everyone here, no matter your level of experience. There are beginner friendly trails at Ponderosa State Park and Bear Basin, which offer a peaceful pedal through the sweet smelling ponderosa pine forest. Bear Basin also offers some more intermediate to advanced trails, with some optional fun rock features.
Additionally, if you are looking for more expert level trails, try Jug Mountain and/or Tamarack bike park. Tamarack runs on weekends in the summer, and you can pay to catch a shuttle at Jug on weekends- or you can pedal up Jug mountain if you so choose. These trails offer a more thrilling ride down, complete with big jumps and drops… YEW!
10. Follow the McCall Ale Trail
In case you’re looking for a fun indoor activity or maybe you just love trying new eateries, it is worth looking into the McCall Ale Trail. To participate, be sure to time your visit between September 15 and May 15.
Then, head to the McCall Chamber of Commerce / Visitor’s Center and ask for a passport. Afterwards, head to as many participating bars and restaurants as you can. Once you’ve gathered 10 stamps, show you passport where you got it from to get a prize. In 2024, the prize was a pint glass and a koozie.
Wondering where to go? Hands down, my favorite is the Salmon River Brewery. Come hungry! They have a generous menu including pizza, sandwiches, and shareable plates.
Bestie Tip: Request a table on the rooftop deck for amazing views of Payette Lake!
