Ultimate Guide to Road Tripping Between Lincoln City and Newport

Things to do Depoe Bay, Oregon Coast sunset,

Growing up in Washington, visiting the Oregon Coast was a summer treat. Crossing the green bridge over the Columbia River, racing to eat ice cream cones before they melted, and seeing awesome rock formations.

Until recently, our trips focused on the Northern Oregon Coast. Because, ya know, they’re closest to Washington.

I’m talking about Fort Stevens, Tillamook, and Cannon Beach / Haystack Rock.

But, this year we wanted to explore further South.

So, we road tripped to the 25-mile stretch of Highway 101 between Lincoln City and Newport.

Oregon Coast road trip map Lincoln City to Newport

Driving Southbound, the main cities you’ll pass through are Lincoln City, Depoe Bay, & Newport.

All in all, it takes ~35 minutes to drive this stretch (without making stops, which you will want to!)

So, it’s easy to visit all of cities in a 2 or 3-day weekend!

This guide includes recommendations for viewpoints, shopping, dining, & more.

Based on its central location, availability of vacation rentals, and a dash of luck we opted to stay in Depoe Bay, Oregon.

Boy, was that one of the best decisions we’ve EVER made while trip planning!!

In a few whirlwind days, we found a new favorite place along the coast.. Not just of Oregon, but of Washington too.

That’s why I’m so excited to share all of the amazing things to do in Depoe Bay! I hope this guide helps you explore the Oregon coast. When you do, I have no doubts you’ll fall in love with it too.

What to know about before visiting the Whale Watching Capital of the Oregon Coast

Depoe Bay bridge, Depoe Bay harbor

Did you know the World’s Smallest Harbor is Depoe Bay?

You’ll find it just North of the central Oregon coast.

Known for epic whale watching, Depoe Bay sits along a rocky shore where waves of the Pacific Ocean crash.

Compared to nearby Lincoln City and Newport, Depoe Bay has the most charming, small town feel. In fact, less than 2,000 residents call it home.

Also, I love how the downtown shops and restaurants lie together on one side of the street. This way, the opposite side is completely open to the ocean (with a rock wall). So, you can enjoy views as you stroll.

Plus, the shopping area isn’t as overwhelming as areas like Seaside with stores on both side of the street.

All along the main street of Highway 101, you can watch raging waves meet land. Conveniently, you’ll find benches and parking spaces sprinkled throughout.

Depending on where you stay, Depoe Bay can be refreshingly walkable!

Getting to Depoe Bay

Oregon Coast Drive with a Subaru Forester, Oregon coast road trip itinerary, Subaru road trip

If you’re a fellow Pacific Northwest road tripper, then the best way to get to Depoe Bay is by car.

And if you are flying in, then I highly recommend renting a car. Although we noticed many bus stops between Lincoln City and Newport, it’s definitely easiest to see all the viewpoints with a car.

Distance from Major Cities

  • Seattle to Depoe Bay: 273 miles, ~5 hours drive time
  • Tacoma to Depoe Bay: 242 miles, ~4.5 hours drive time
  • Portland to Depoe Bay: 100 miles, ~2.25 hours drive time
  • Salem to Depoe Bay: 71 miles, ~1.5 hours drive time

Nearest Major Airports

  • Eugene (EUG): 81 miles to Depoe Bay ~2 hours drive time
  • Portland (PDX): 120 miles to Depoe Bay, ~2.5 hours drive time

When to Visit Depoe Bay

How long should you spend in Depoe Bay?

For our anniversary, we visited over a 3-day weekend in April. We found this to be the perfect amount of time! We saw all the viewpoints, beaches, and tried a few different restaurants.

In the future, I’d love to spend extended time here for a slower paced trip. As someone who works remotely, I can definitely imagine spending a week or two here while working from a cafe or vacation rental with a view. *Manifesting this*

Plus, spring is off-season for travel in Depoe Bay.

Although it’s not the prime time for sunshine, it’s the perfect time to visit if you’re looking for solitude.

Or if you, like me, are a sucker for moody Pacific Northwest vibes then you’ll love a spring trip to the Oregon coast!

Personally, we wouldn’t visit for any less days because of the drive time from where we live.

Nevertheless, summer in Depoe Bay is popular for a reason!

It’s during this time that resident gray whales return to feed near the shore. So, if you’re hoping to whale watch from the shore, visiting between summer and fall may be your best bet!

But from what I’ve gathered, it seems there’s a fair chance of seeing whales all year in Depoe Bay.

Why? Because gray whales migrate migrate South to Mexico in the winter and then back North to Alaska in the spring.

Overall, there isn’t a bad time to visit Depoe Bay.

It all depends on what trade offs between weather, cost, and crowds you’re willing to make!

Where to Stay

Without a doubt, there’s no shortage of places to stay around Depoe Bay.

While I recommend staying in Depoe Bay and day-tripping North to Lincoln City and South to Newport, you may prefer to stay elsewhere between Lincoln City and Newport.

I’ll admit, if you want to be on a sandy beach, then Depoe Bay may not be your best option!

Thankfully, you can explore the same places regardless of where you stay.

All of the following stays are close to downtown Depoe Bay, making them extremely walkable!

Truly, it was sooo nice to drive North and South on highway 101 during the day and then return back to our home base in Depoe Bay and take a break from driving haha.

Top Rated Places to Stay in Depoe Bay

  • The Inn at Arch Rock: Stay in a hotel atop a cliff overlooking a dramatic Pacific Ocean scene. Opt or cozy rooms with fireplaces or penthouse suites with full kitchens. There isn’t really parking to access it, that’s why staying close is so important!
  • Sweet Homes Condo: Be in the center of it all in this modern condo. Of all the properties, this style and decor totally stole my heart!! It’s gorgeous. Better yet, there’s ocean views. Pet friendly!

  • Whale Inn: Bring your dogs and cats along for the adventure at Whale Inn. Here, you’ll have access to a spacious unit featuring a full kitchen. Each unit is assigned one parking spot. While there aren’t ample campgrounds in Depoe Bay, I’m sharing the best ones we found between Lincoln City and Newport. From North to South:

  • Sea and Sand RV Park: North of Depoe Bay, you’ll find RV sites with ocean or forest views. However, tents are not permitted. Be aware of dog breed restrictions before booking.

  • Beverley Beach State Park: In Newport, enjoy year round camping in a forest. Enjoy ocean and creek access. Yurts, tent sites, & full hook-up sites are available. Note: Highway 101 runs above this park, so road noise is likely.

Tucked beachside in Southern Newport, you’ll have access to miles of sandy beach and plenty of trails for biking or walking. First things first, take a walk on the beach!

This gorgeous sandy beach blew any expectations I had out of the water.

While the waves were too large to safely swim, there was a creek which we saw many kids playing in.

At low tide, look for tidepools near the rocks.

Finally, Fogarty Creek Recreation Area is a wonderful place for a forested nature walk. From the parking lot, bridges will get you over the creek and to the forest.

On the drive to Depoe Bay, this is the place that really made me say “Wow!”

Looking to the right, you’ll see a small waterfall meeting the ocean.

Then as you turn, Lincoln City comes into view. Keep turning, because the views sure are wide!

It’s sure a dramatic viewpoint.

Plus, it’s known for birdwatching. You may see pelicans, oystercatchers, and even albatrosses. Be sure to stay on your side of the fence to protect birds.

Depoe Bay Scenic View Area & Park

In the heart of town, you can’t miss Depoe Bay Scenic Park. It stretches through downtown, across from local businesses. There are many benches to rest awhile on. Bring the binoculars for whale watching!

However, it’s very easy to miss Depoe Bay Scenic View Area.

Why? Because it’s tucked away in a neighborhood of vacation rentals and homes.

The .1 mile stretch of grassy, rocky coastline is open to the public.

Many benches are available. We also noticed pretty wildflowers!

Ideally, you’d walk here as there isn’t really clearly-marked parking spots. Something to keep in mind while booking your stay.

Depoe Bay Beach

Located in front of the Inn at Arch Rock and Harbor Inn hotels, it’s the one and only beach in the city (see upper right).

Although there isn’t a parking lot, there is ample street parking.

I’m not sure if it is considered a black sand beach, but it totally seemed like it!

Note: There’s a steep, rough walk down with a large rope. May not be the best for kids or dogs.

Tidal Raves Seafood Grill

If you’re in the mood for a fine dining experience, this is it. I’ve heard lots of good things about the seafood here!

Of all the coffee shops I’ve visited, Arch Rock Cafe is one of the most memorable!

Not only was the coffee delicious, but the lively atmosphere was exactly what I was looking for.

There’s outdoor dog-friendly seating with ocean views. Or, you can sip your drink in the beautifully designed interior.

Guess what? They even have a hanging egg chair!

Beer lovers, you can’t go wrong with lunch or dinner at The Horn. Trust me, we loved it so much that we went there for dinner twice in a row haha!

Our favorites were the salmon sandwich and clam chowder.

Since we had our pup, we placed takeout orders over the phone. Super easy.

Although this center was closed seasonally during out visit, it is definitely on our list for next time!

That being said, you can always access the viewing deck. Here, you can read interpretive signs about the astounding migrations.

When open, you can go inside to learn more about the grey whales who migrate through Depoe Bay twice a year.

Check out their website here for hours.

While driving down Highway 101, keep an eye out for fins, tails, and spouts!

Road Ends State Recreation Area

On our Oregon Coast road trip, this was our very first stop!

The beach was beautiful from the overlook at the parking lot as well as when we walked down.

But for us, the coolest part was seeing God’s Thumb.

It’s a rugged, grass-covered piece of land that sticks up- well, like a thumb.

We knew we wanted to hike there, so seeing it from this perspective was thrilling!

Hike The Knoll & God’s Thumb

Hand downs, the best hike in the area is The Knoll (shown above) and God’s Thumb (shown below).

They share a forested loop trail. It’s impressive, breathtaking, and not for the faint of heart. (At least, not all the way out onto the Thumb).

According to signage and trail reports, it is not uncommon to small herds of Roosevelt Elk. On a sunny, busy Saturday morning we didn’t cross paths with any. Better luck at dusk or dawn.

All in all, we logged 6.34 miles and gained 1335′ elevation.

Pro Tip: It’s easy to get confused on where to park and where the trailhead starts. Ample street parking is available at The Knoll at Cascade Villages Head Trail. From there, walk to the roundabout and past the sign. You can go either direction: Counterclockwise will take you to the The Knoll first, while clockwise will take you by God’s Thumb first.

Pub Fish & Chips

What’s a trip to the coast without fish & chips?

We loved ordering takeout from Pub Fish & Chips and then taking it to Roads End State Recreation Area, just down the road.

It might’ve been the best we’ve had!

Pig N’ Pancake (also has a Newport location)

For big breakfast lovers, Pig N’ Pancake is the way to go.

With locations in Cannon Beach, Seaside, Newport, & more you probably have heard of it if you’ve been to the Northern Oregon Coast.

For over 60 years, this has been the go-to family place for all things breakfast.

Personally, I’m a sucker for the strawberry crepes!

Lincoln City Beach Access

Looking to drive on the beach? This was the ONLY spot we found to do so.

Coming from Washington, this was a surprise!

We drove our Subaru Forester down the steep road to the loose sand. Do be careful not to get stuck!

Also to our surprise, this is an excellent spot for tidepooling!

Check tide charts here.

Lincoln City Outlets

How does shopping tax-free sound?! Since there’s no sales tax in Oregon, this is the perfect time for a little retail therapy -especially if the weather isn’t cooperating!

A few of the stores include Nike, Adidas, Columbia, Pendleton, & more.

Interestingly, you can also try axe throwing at Scout Northwest Trading Co. Although that isn’t my thing, I did enjoy its selection of outdoor gear.

Siletz Bay Oregon, Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge, Things to do near Depoe Bay
Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge

Ya know what isn’t talked about enough? The serene wildlife refuges along the Oregon and Washington coast.

Siletz Bay captured my heart immediately.

Its tall grasses, winding river, & mountain background are simply stunning.

Although you can’t bring your furry friends, you’ll have a change to spot wildlife like Bald Eagles, Great Blue Heron, spawning salmon, and deer.

For a short 0.5 mile gravel hike, try the Alder Island Nature Trail.

Also, you can explore by water! Bring or rent a kayak.

Things to do in & around Newport (Driving South from Depoe Bay)

I swear, this part of the drive is LIKE A DREAM. So, get your cameras ready and stop at the following viewpoints.

Heading South on Highway 101 / N Coast Highway, look for Whale Cove Inn (to your right).

After you see it, take the 2nd exit at Rodea Viewpoint.

Don’t miss it because the next few viewpoints are only accessible via a one-way road known as Otter Crest Loop.

This road runs parallel to Highway 101, but is closer to the water’s edge.

Rocky Creek Bridge

Besides rugged coastlines, the West Coast is also known for concrete arch bridges.

Standing in clear contrast to the green hills they’re built into, the bridges are quite the marvel.

Similar to Big Sur’s Bixby Creek Bridge, this one is a sight to see.

Just past the bridge there’s a small parking lot where you can stop for a photo-op.

Next, continue on the winding route to Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint.

Along the way, you’ll get spoiled with peak-a-boo views.

Once parked, it’s a very short walk to the viewing area.

Of all the surreal sights on the Oregon Coast, this one takes the cake for me.

Why? Because of the unique vantage spot 500′ above the waves and the shoreline that looks like it has big bites taken out of it.

Do you see it too?!

Surprisingly, there’s a gift shop up there. But, Cape Foulweather Lookout Observatory and Gift Shop was closed when we visited.

As you might have guessed from the name, this area is popular for a hollowed out rock in the shape of a punch bowl. At high tide, and particularly during storms, waves rush in and up through the hole.

But, there’s so much more to do at this park!

You can rent surfing gear and ride waves, visit a small winery, or go tide-pooling.

Plus, at low tide you can actually hike down into the pool! Awesome, right?

You’ll know you’re nearing Newport once you reach Yaquina Head Lighthouse. In fact, Newport is nestled between lighthouses to the North and South.

Did you know this is the tallest lighthouse in Oregon?

At a towering 93 feet, Yaquina Head is a great stop on the Oregon Coast. Plus, you can tour it!

Besides this, visitors may explore the interpretive center to learn history, see tide pools at Cobble Beach, or hike 0.7 mi to the top of Salal Hill.

Dogs are allowed in some areas, but not near the lighthouse.

Last but not least, do not get me started on the views!! There’s some breathtaking rocks in the waters around the lighthouse.

Newport Historic Bayfront

While there is no shortage of restaurants and shops in Newport, the Newport Historic Bayfront is the center of it all. (Although, not physically).

This walkable area features seafood, candy, coffee, and souvenirs.

Additionally, don’t forget to look and listen for sea lions on the docks!

Newport Oregon Beach, Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, Oregon Coast activities
Yaquina Bay Lighthouse

As you approach the Southern side of Newport, swing by Yaquina Bay Lighthouse.

While shorter than Yaquina Head Lighthouse, this one is actually well-known as the oldest wooden Oregon lighthouse around today.

Plus, it’s got a certain home-like charm to it.

But my favorite part of the park isn’t the lighthouse. It’s actually the sandy beach!

There’s lots of bright sand to stretch your legs on, for the pups too.

Park above and either walk down to the beach or enjoy the peaceful picnic area nestled in trees.

Oregon Coast Aquarium

If you’re looking for an indoor or kid-friendly activity, then add the Oregon Coast Aquarium to your itinerary.

It’s home to octopus, sharks, seabirds, and more.

Also, for a more in-depth experience they offer behind-the-scenes tours of animal care.

Admission for adults age 18-64 is $24.95. Tickets for children range from free up to $14.95.
