What to Know Before Visiting Bellingham

Since many out-of-state travelers chose Seattle as their main city destination, Bellingham is a hidden gem.

Located in Northern Washington, the city of Bellingham is undeniably beautiful. It’s surrounded by deep blue waters, snow-capped mountains, and the San Juan Islands.

Plus, Canada is so close that you can see it! Since the border is only 20 miles away, it’s a great stop if you’re headed to Vancouver, British Columbia.

If you live in Washington, you’ve probably heard of Bellingham. Growing up, I had.

But, I didn’t visit the City of Subdued Excitement until high school when I toured Western Washington State University (WWU).

What ultimately drew me in? Nature. The thriving community of hikers, paddlers, and mountain bikers. And this culture extends beyond student groups.

Although I did not end up attending WWU, Bellingham is 100% worth visiting. I’m making up for lost time now!

25 Insanely Fun Things to Do in Bellingham Washington

1. Visit Washington’s First State Park

Skip rocks, paddle, and hike at Larabee State Park during a day trip to Bellingam. Above all, soak up breathtaking views of Samish Bay. Also, you’ll get amazing close-up views of the San Juan Islands. Day use is $10 or $30 for a Discover Pass (valid at all state parks).

If you want to stay longer, try camping. You can reserve sites for the busy season May 15-September 15. Otherwise, the sites are first-come-first serve.

Please note: Trains pass through this park daily. You can easily view them if you wish. If camping, be sure to bring ear plugs or headphones!

2. Hike to Fragrance Lake

Park at the trailhead on Chuckanut Drive, near the main entrance to Larabee State Park. Enjoy a beginner and dog-friendly hike through old growth forests. Expect to log 5.5 miles and 950 ft. elevation gain. Don’t forget to display a Discover Pass in your car.

3. Drive Scenic Chuckanut Drive

As one of the top scenic drives in Washington, Chuckanut Drive offers 19 miles of waterfront bliss. The road winds high above the shore and offer multiple viewing areas to pull over. From here, you can admire Samish Bay and the San Juan Islands.

Pro Tip: If approaching Bellingham from the South, try driving this route to the city. We always do this, often at sunset, and never regret it. I promise, it’s much more beautiful than I-5!

If you enjoy seafood, then stop by The Oyster Bar on Chuckanut Drive. It’s a luxury dining experience complete with local cuisine, fine wine, and waterfront views. Their menu also includes vegetarian options.

4. Hike to Teddy Bear Cove

To reach 2 small beaches that are less crowded than those at Larabee, drive down the road to Teddy Bear Cove. Enter “Teddy Bear Cove Parking” into Google Maps. If you don’t, it is easy to miss the small lot.

Here, you can hike a brief but steep 1.8 miles through the forest to the shore.

Personally, this is my favorite spot to view trains!

No passes are required here. However, please check the tide charts before hiking. If you go at high tide, there may not be any beach access.

5. See a Waterfall in Whatcom Falls Park

Stroll through the forest to a picturesque stone bridge overlooking a waterfall. You can meander on many trails, or simply park and a walk a quick 100 yards to the falls.

This park is dog-friendly.

No passes are required.

6. Eat Fresh Foods from Community Food Co-Op

Pick up locally grown, organic groceries to cook on your trip. Plus, you will find smoothies, espresso, deli & bakery goods ideal for on-the-go.

They have 2 locations, one in downtown Bellingham and one in the Guide Meridian area.

7. Walk the Bellingham Boardwalk from Boulevard Park

We keep coming back here every time we visit. Honestly, it’s at the very top of my personal list of things to do in Bellingham Washington.

Similar to Larabee State Park, the views of Samish Bay and the San Juan Islands are incredible. This is a perfect spot to see the mountains of Canada, too.

This dog-friendly walk is a breeze, covering about 1.5 miles.

At the park, you can also hang a hammock, enjoy a picnic, or even go for a swim.

8. Get a Drink from Woods Coffee Boulevard Park

Of all the places to go in Bellingham, Woods Coffee is beloved by many. The local coffee chain has speciality drinks like the Avalanche. This sweet blended treat includes caramel, white chocolate, and coconut.

In the fall and winter, I highly recommend their salted caramel drinks!

This convenient location is at Boulevard Park. So, you can park, grab a drink, and go for a walk.

If you need to do some work on your trip, this coffeeshop the place to do it. Wait until you see the view!

9. Go for a Paddle

With all the fresh and salt water, Bellingham is the perfect place to paddle! You can rent kayaks and paddle boards from REI or many local businesses like Bloedel Boat Rentals. I recommend launching from the Larabee State Park Boat Launch or Lake Whatcom.

10. Hike Oyster Dome Trail

If there’s one Bellingham hike you do, let it be this one! I’ll never forget the view of Samish Bay. The sunshine making the water sparkle. The immense, bumpy San Juan Islands. And seeing it all from 2025 feet up.

There are two routes to chose from. First, you can park at the Oyster Dome Trailhead along Chuckanut Drive. This trail is ~7 miles and 2,025 ft. elevation gain. Discover Pass is required.

Alternatively, you can park at Samish Bay Overlook (more on that below) and save yourself some work. Expect 5 miles and 1050 ft. elevation gain. Discover Pass is required. I strongly recommend this route!

Either way, the elevation is no joke! Be sure to bring plenty of water. There are small water crossings in the summer, so you can bring a filter for additional drinking water.

Bring your furry friends, just be sure to pack out waste and keep them leashed.

Pro Tip: Pack a hammock. There are lots of trees at the top that you can swing from. This was the best hammock view we’ve had yet!

11. Drive to Cyrus Gates Vista Overlook

Another wonderful spot to get a high vantage point of Samish Bay is Cyrus Gates Vista Overlook. This is a little-known viewpoint within Larabee State Park. To get here, it’s a 20-minute drive up Chuckanut Mountain from the campground.

The road you’ll take also provides access to hiking trails like the Chuckanut Ridge Trail and Lost Lake.

12. Explore Downtown Bellingham

While I love the natural areas Bellingham offers, its charming downtown can’t be missed. Park and walk to shops, restaurants, and coffee shops.

We regularly stop by Backcountry Essentials for their large selection of secondhand outdoors clothing and gear. Or, another sustainable shop is Buffalo Exchange, for trendy secondhand clothing.

13. Dine Outdoors at Taco Bar Black Sheep Tacos (downtown Bellingham)

While downtown, you must try Black Sheep Tacos! My go-to order is their butternut squash tacos. They are bursting with flavor.

During happy hour, you can score their Frozen Milagro Margarita for half-off. So, I mean why not?

You can dine indoors our outdoors. For us, the cozy outdoors option is irresistible. They even have small propane fires in the center of every table.

14. Explore Fairhaven Washington

Up until 1903, Fairhaven was its own town. That’s why it sort of feels like Bellingham’s second downtown.

The historic charm stole my heart instantly. Keep an eye out for architecture like brick buildings and Victorian homes. They’re a signal that you are entering Fairhaven.

While I love downtown Bellingham, I have to admit that Fairhaven is my favorite. Below are the best things to do in Fairhaven, Washington.

15. Pick up a Book from Village Books and Paper Dreams Bookstore (Fairhaven)

Since 1908, this community-based bookstore has helped ignite the imagination of readers and writers. You can find books from local authors on local subjects. For example, on my last visit I picked up Puget Sound’s A Narrative of Early Tacoma and the Southern Sound.

Besides books, you will can also find lots of souvenirs.

16. Dine at The Filling Station (Fairhaven)

When we’re really hungry (like after hiking Osyter Dome) our restaurant of choice is The Filling Station. We come back time after time for their thick milkshakes and thick french fries. Plus, their barbecue sauce is delicious – try it with your fries.

On the inside, expect a vintage, automotive themed-feel. Think Cheeseburger in Paradise, but in Washington. (The license-plate covered ceiling reminds me of the iconic restaurant in Lahaina, Maui).

This restaurant offers dog-friendly patio seating and takeout. More than once, we’ve ordered takeout to enjoy at nearby Boulevard Park!

17. Grab Breakfast at Avenue Bread & Cafe (Fairhaven)

Known for their fresh bread and espresso, Avenue Bread is great for a light bite.

We love their Eggenues (breakfast-style sandwiches on English muffins). I recommend the Veggie – it’s simple, yet flavorful with onion. They also have heartier sandwiches, soups, and salads.

18. Dine at Ovn Wood Fired Pizza (Fairhaven)

If you’re in the mood for pizza, then head over to Ovn Wood Fired Pizza. The Neopolitan-style pizzas are the perfect sharing size for 2 people – along with a salad to start.

The House salad hits the spot! It features shaved Grana, argula, lemon, and olive oil.

It’s a boutique, luxe type of vibe inside.

19. See sunset at Samish Overlook

Dare I say this is the most beautiful sunset spot in Washington?

My list of things to do in Bellingham Washington would not be complete without sharing a sunset spot. And friends, this is it.

I feel like a broken record, but the views of Samish Bay and the San Juan Islands are stunning. You have to see for yourself!

If you’re lucky, you may even see people paragliding. We did once, and it looked thrilling.

With no hiking required, it is easily accessible. Be sure to bring and display a Discover Pass.

The road up is gravel, but is usually well-maintained.

Samish Bay Overlook is also the trailhead to Oyster Dome (easier route) and Lily and Lizard Lakes.

20. Ride Mountain Bikes at Gailbraith Mountain and Padden Trails

A favorite pass-time of Bellingham residents and visitors is mountain biking. The rush of adrenaline and wind keeps riders fueled. Thankfully, there are extensive trail systems here.

Don’t have a bike? You can rent from places like Trek Bicycle Bellingham. They even have electric bikes.

21. Drive to Mount Baker

Bellingham and Mt. Baker go hand-in-hand. You can not only see the tall peak from the city, but you can easily drive to it.

Take the Mt. Baker Scenic Highway (State Route 542). From Bellingham to the Mt. Baker Ski Area, it’s just under an hour and a half.

Once there, hop on the many popular hiking trails like those to Artist Point, Picture Lake, and Yellow Aster Butte.

The in-your-face views of Mt. Baker will blow your mind!

22. Visit North Cascades National Park

The most remote national park in Washington is an easy day trip from Bellingham. Drive along Highway 20 to see ragged mountain peaks and brilliant green-blue lakes.

Stop for a hike or two before returning to Bellingham. Here are some of the most popular:
-Thunder Knob Trail 3.5 miles, 425 ft. elevation gain (easy)
-Maple Loop Pass 7.2 miles, 2000ft. elevation gain (moderate)
-Sourdough Mountain 10.4 miles, 4870 ft. elevation fain (hard)

Please note: Highway 20 closes seasonally during winter.

23. Dine at a Brewery

Without a doubt, Bellingham is known for their renowned craft beer. A few of the top-rated ones are Aslan Brewing Company, Gruff Brewing, and Kulshan Brewing.

I could soak up the beautiful water views all day, but it isn’t quite the same as being out on the water.

If you feel the same, then add a little excitement to your trip with a boat tour. This way, you can go whale watching or enjoy a romantic sunset dinner from the water.

Try walking or biking the family-friendly 6.2 mile Hertz Trail along the shores of Lake Whatcom. Keep an eye out for old growth trees, birds, and waterfalls.
