Every year, holiday magic fills the air in Bellevue, Washington. Here’s a local’s guide to Snowflake Lane and many more festive activities to try this December.

What makes Snowflake Lane special?

Hands down, the most popular event is Snowflake Lane. This free nightly parade takes place in the heart of The Bellevue Collection. Featuring Rudolph, toy drummers, Santa Claus, & many more recognizable characters, it is an upbeat experience that is sure to get you in the holiday spirit.

Kids and adults alike are welcome to join in by singing, dancing, and playing in the snow (guaranteed to fall as the parade winds down each night).

As someone who grew up in Western Washington, I can honestly say that I haven’t experienced a comparable Christmas parade that is on the level this one is at. Or, that has this many opportunities to catch it!

When is Snowflake Lane?

Generally, Snowflake Lane begins just following Thanksgiving. In 2024, it runs November 29 to December 24 and kicks off at 7pm.

That being said, it is very important to arrive at least an hour early. Thankfully, parking is free at any of the 3 Bellevue Square parking garages.

The earlier you arrive, the easier it will be to find parking and claim your parade-watching spot.

What should I know before visiting Snowflake Lane?

If you are planning your first visit to Snowflake Lane, here are a few bestie tips:

  • Come hungry + with a dinner reservation. We often come 2 – 2.5 hours early to eat at places like The Cheesecake Factory or one of the many renowned local restuarants. When possible, make a reservation 2 or 3 weeks in advance during the holiday season.
  • Pick your spot ASAP. Since Snowflake Parade has been getting more and more popular each year (or so it seems to me, haha!) it is best to scope out where you want to watch the parade from no later than 6pm. Some people bring lawn chairs, but if you plan on sitting near the curb then I’d recommend not crowding the space with unnecessary items. Instead, you can bring a sit pad or a blanket. But, know that the majority of people end up standing.
  • Dress warm! Although real snow from the sky is unlikely, it still gets chilly standing outside. So, I always recommend bringing a heavy water resistant jacket, gloves, and a beanie. Since it is Washington, waterproof boots aren’t a bad idea either.
  • Bring your kids. I’ve seen people of all ages enjoy Snowflake Lane, though young children seem the most excited about it. Usually, the characters are very friendly about engaging with kids (by waving, passing out candy canes, posing for photos, etc.)
  • Grab a warm drink from Woods Coffee! Located on the first floor of Bellevue Square, this Bellingham-based coffee shop serves great seasonal drinks like . I always love grabbing a drink to enjoy during the parade. (Since you’ll need to stake out your spot early, it’s best to bring an insulated reusable tumbler to keep drinks warm longer).
  • Know where the parade runs by taking a screenshot of this map ahead of time.

Of all the beautiful light shows I’ve seen, Garden D’Lights at the Bellevue Botanical Gardens is my favorite! That’s because of it’s nature theme.

You’ll walk through the gardens to see flowers, birds, insects, and even waterfalls made of lights.

And, if you’re anything like me, you’ll love a drink or sweet treat from Copper Kettle Coffee Bar. This woman-owned coffee stand is located in the Shorts House (which is inside the botanical gardens).

While you won’t find reindeer in downtown Bellevue, you can find them ~15 minutes away at the Cougar Mountain Zoo.

Compared to the Woodland Park Zoo or Point Defiance Zoo, this is a hidden gem! While smaller, it still is an interesting activity to couple with Snowflake Lane. Of course, you will want to do this before the parade (Santa will be on site all day until 4pm).

Open daily December 1-23. As with the other activities mentioned, tickets should be purchased online.
