Review of the Incredible Shoestring Circus: Delivering Big Top Magic to Small Towns

This summer, I had the joy of witnessing my very first circus. Not just any circus, but one that travels with its own vintage big top tent and a whole lot of heart. The Shoestring Circus came through Orting, Washington on their summer tour. Let me tell you: I’m still thinking about the glow of the string lights, the gasp-worthy performances, and the warmth of the whole experience.

My Honest Shoestring Circus Review

Based out of Bellingham, Shoestring Circus is a small but mighty group of performers who bring a classic circus vibe with modern twists. The energy is collaborative, whimsical, and full of genuine passion for their craft. You can tell this troupe pours love into every detail, from the handmade costumes to the way they interact with the audience.

During the summer of 2025, the group’s tour stops included Bellingham, Olympia, Orting, and Vancouver. Performances ran from June through early August.

How to Book Tickets

The process of getting tickets is a breeze. I booked online and had the choice between general admission ($34.50 for adults) or front row reserved seats ($50.25). We splurged for the front row—and honestly, I’m so glad we did. When we arrived, a friendly staff member escorted us to our seats (yes, escorted!) and we settled into what I truly believe were the best seats in the house.

Not only did we have an unobstructed view of the entire ring, but there was plenty of legroom—a rarity at most events—and space under the chairs for bags and our reusable water bottles. It felt perfectly comfortable.

When to Arrive

We got to the tent about 40 minutes before showtime. I’d recommend doing the same, since this is when the tent opens. Parking was super easy thanks to a large gravel lot right next to the tent (a small but very appreciated detail). That gave us plenty of time to snap some photos outside the red striped tent. Which, by the way, has this charming, old-school look that really adds to the atmosphere.

Inside, we checked out the concession stand and were pleasantly surprised to find nostalgic snacks like popcorn and cotton candy, alongside chilled drinks like sparkling water. There was also a small but thoughtfully curated souvenir stand. Here, you’ll find everything from magic trick kits to Shoestring Circus-branded tees and hats. My favorite? The handmade jewelry made from recycled tent materials—such a creative and sustainable touch!

What to Expect During the Show: 90 Minutes of Wonder

Circus in Washington State

The show itself runs about 90 minutes long with a 15-minute intermission in the middle—just enough time to stretch your legs or grab another snack. But honestly, I was so swept up in the performance that time flew by.

What really set the Shoestring Circus apart for me was the way the entire show was wrapped into a story. Each act wasn’t just a standalone moment—it contributed to an overarching narrative that kept us engaged from start to finish. That made every scene feel connected. Therefore, giving the show a lovely rhythm that my friends and I were hooked onto.

The performances themselves were stunning. Here’s a taste of what we saw:

  • Aerialists twist and spin high above the crowd
  • Gymnasts tumble with impossible grace,
  • Jugglers move in perfect, almost meditative sync

Along the way, there’s many laugh-out-loud moments. This is thanks to the comedic bits, and even a few surprises—like a breathtaking opera solo that actually gave me chills.

What I Loved Most About the Shoestring Circus

There was something magical about sitting just a few feet away from the performers and seeing the effort, expression, and sheer joy on their faces. The aerial silks act especially stands out in my memory—billowing fabric, dramatic lighting, and the most fluid, balletic movement I’ve ever seen. It absolutely felt more like art than acrobatics.

The lighting design also deserves a mention. Warm, golden lights illuminated the tent like a dream, making everything feel cozy, nostalgic, and a little bit surreal. I was totally mesmerized from start to finish.

Why You Need to Go

Shoestring Circus isn’t just for kids or families (though there were plenty of delighted little ones in the crowd!). It’s an experience that taps into something deeper—joy, wonder, curiosity. And in a time when everything can feel so fast-paced and digital, this unplugged, real-life spectacle was refreshing in all the right ways.

I walked away from the show already thinking about who I want to bring with me next time. My parents would absolutely love it—especially the storytelling and musical elements. It’s the kind of event that stays with you. Honestly, I’m already keeping an eye on their tour calendar to catch another show soon.
