When the Harry Potter Forbidden Experience is Actually Worth it

The Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience is one of those things where the second I heard it was coming to a city near me, I knew I had to go – before I even fully understood what it was, haha. If you’re anything like me, the phrase “Harry Potter” is enough to get your attention.
We made the road trip from Seattle to Vancouver, BC. This is about a 2.5–3 hour drive depending on traffic. From there, the experience was held during the evenings at the iconic Stanley Park. While it was overall a really positive and magical experience, there were definitely a few things I didn’t expect. To help you decide if you should go – or to get you ready if you already bought tickets – keep reading for my honest review.
What is the Experience, Exactly?

As of January 2026, the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience is a limited-time pop-up evening event. In total, over two million visitors have seen across 11 cities on 4 continents! There is something special about a story that can connect so many people. Don’t you think?
The experience itself is an outdoor walking trail through a forested area of the park, designed to feel like you’ve stepped straight into the wizarding world. Along the path, you’ll find interactive moments that delight the senses. For example, you can cast spells, plus enjoy the company of beloved characters like Hagrid and Fang (and some more ominous ones too – yes, Death Eaters included 👀).
The ambiance is really where this experience shines. Between the lighting, sound effects, themed installations, and even the taste (hello, butterbeer), it really does bring the magic to life in a way that feels immersive rather than gimmicky.

How much does it cost to attend the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience?

Purchasing Tickets
Tickets are best purchased in advance online. And prices vary by day and time. We visited late on a weekday with an 8:45pm entrance to save money. I highly recommend this strategy.
Not only was it the perfect amount of time, but it wasn’t crowded at all. We were able to linger, take photos, and enjoy the interactive moments without feeling rushed.
Full-price adult tickets range from CAD $43–$86.
There are also deluxe bundles available, which include a “fast-pass–style” option at select interactive spots and a handful of merch. I can definitely see this being useful during peak weekend times, but personally, the merch didn’t really appeal to me, so we skipped it.
Are Add-Ons Worth It?
After selecting your ticket, you’ll be prompted to consider extras. This includes extras like wands, robes, and parking. However, I skipped all of these. But, if you already own a wand, you absolutely should bring it.
Bestie tip: The spell-casting experiences are best done with a wand or wand-like item. I didn’t know this beforehand and was a little disappointed that I didn’t bring mine. Luckily, my partner Kyle (very resourceful) found me a stick on the ground that looked like a wand, and that’s what we used! We also saw someone use an umbrella, so feel free to get creative. Technically, you can simply use your arm too.
We opted not to prepay for parking and had no trouble finding a spot nearby. But, though those spaces still required meter payment.

Value: Timing is Everything!
To be totally honest: I would not pay full price for this experience during a busy time. As much as I love Harry Potter, I don’t think it would feel as magical if you were waiting in long lines and feeling rushed through spells or photos. Once, during the bowing Buckbeak part, we were able to repeat it a few times since there was no one else waiting. This is ideal for capturing the moment with photos and videos!
Hands down, going late on a weekday made all the difference. It felt relaxed and genuinely fun, surrounded by other fans (many dressed up like me) making their own magical memories.

What to Wear to Explore the Wizarding World
Since the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience takes place outdoors and in the evening, what you wear can seriously impact how much you enjoy it. Winter nights (especially in the Pacific Northwest and Vancouver) can get cold. And once the sun goes down, that forest chill is no joke.
So, I recommend dressing warmly with layers. Think cozy-cute: a warm coat, gloves, and a beanie or knit hat go a long way—especially if you plan to linger at interactive spots or take lots of photos. I was really glad I bundled up, and I honestly my Gryffindor robe kept my whole body warm.
Comfortable walking shoes are also a must. You’ll be on your feet for most of the experience, slowly walking the trail and stopping often. That said, hiking boots weren’t necessary for our trail. This was because the path was completely paved. So, waterproof sneakers works perfectly.
Important note: Trail conditions may vary by city and venue, so I recommend double-checking what the path looks like where you’re visiting before you go.
Fun Drinks Along the Trail

Additionally, winter evenings like the one we went on can definitely get chilly, so warming up with a drink was a very welcome touch.
Butterbeer was available in a collectible reusable glass, which I opted not to get—but still enjoyed the drink itself. They also offered hot chocolate themed to each of the four Hogwarts houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Each one had fun details like sprinkles in your chosen house colors.
Unfortunately, I didn’t try the hot chocolate this time. That being said, I absolutely would in the future. Just imagine it on a snowy night!
Souvenirs from the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest

To my surprise, there was a ton of merch was available at the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience. Like an entire room. Everything from robes and collectible wands to cozy House hoodies and even holiday ornaments lined the shop.
To be fully transparent, none of it really spoke to me, so we didn’t purchase anything. That said, I did appreciate that the trail naturally leads you through the merch area at the end of the experience – so if something does catch your eye, you don’t have to carry it with you all night.
Final Thoughts: Was it Worth It?
If you’re a Harry Potter fan and can go during a quieter time, the Harry Potter Forbidden Forest Experience is absolutely worth considering. The setting, atmosphere, and interactive elements come together in a way that feels genuinely magical – especially when you’re not rushed.
Just go in with the right expectations, dress warmly, bring a wand (or find a stick like we did), and treat it as a cozy, immersive evening rather than a high-energy theme park attraction.
